Jake Baked the Cake

Authors: B. G. Hennessy and Mary Morgan

Jake Baked the Cake
What a joy of a book. The illustrations are so soft and beautiful and really help to tell the story, as they should. The story is about a town getting ready for a wedding. There's just a line or two on each page, and they rhyme, periodically reverting to, "while Jake baked the cake". Both boys and girls 7 and under should enjoy this. My five year boy included.

A toddler favorite
"The bride's gown was made in town/the groom's pants arrived from France/the champagne came from Spain/while Jake baked the Cake!" As everyone in town gets ready for a big church wedding, we keep checking in on baker Jake, who isn't quite finished with the fancy wedding cake. Will he finish in time? Toddlers cheer him on by chiming in with the chorus "Jake baked the cake!" A delightful picture book to prepare youngsters for all the preparations that precede a wedding.

Jasmine Nights & Monkey Pluck: Love, Discovery and Tea

Authors: Marylu Downing, Ellen Galford, and Faith Morgan
Average review score:

Very highly recommended reading for tea lovers everywhere
Jasmine Nights & Monkey Pluck: Love, Discovery And Tea is an engaging celebration of the pleasure of savoring a steaming cup of tea. Lush, full-color photographs by Ellen Galford and Faith Morgan blend with brief narrative and poetry vignettes collaboratively collected by Marylu Downing, Faith Morgan, Ellen Galford to highlight the simple joys of tea. Jasmine Nights & Monkey Pluck is a gentle meditative book which is very highly recommended reading for tea lovers everywhere.

A beautiful and inspiring book
This collection of short prose pieces offers the reader quiet moments of private musings, such as occur over a cup of tea or while cutting back the blackberry bushes and meditating on the prickly business of love. The writers made me laugh, cry, and sigh over the sheer lucidity and wisdom being served in prose-poems alongside photo-collages of teacups. "Jasmine Nights & Monkey Pluck: Love Discovery and Tea" is a book to be treasured, read and re-read, passed on as a gift to special friends.

Jedediah Smith and the Opening of the West
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (December, 1964)
Author: Dale Lowell Morgan
Average review score:

How far can a man walk in ten years?
The saga of Jedediah Smith began at age 23, and ended ten years later, in 1831, when, on the Santa Fe trail, he was killed by indians when he stopped for a drink from a stream. He was one of the first true mountain men and trappers whose life story, during those ten years, introduces the reader to others whose names are more familiar now than his own. He died before the western movement began that relied so heavily upon the knowledge of such persons. Yet it is doubtful that any, except perhaps Kit Carson, came close to exploring so much country, much of it alone, or nearly so. The book is a scholarly presentation of his incredible feats each, for the most part, intended to discover the elusive beaver. Jedediah's territory covered the then unknown expanse ranging from the confluence of the Yellowstone and the Missouri Rivers, current site of Fort Union where I purchased my book, to Oregon, California as far south as LA, east along the Old Spanish Trial and the Gila River as well as into NM and everywhere in between. His knowledge of so vast a country was invaluable and, in spite of his untimely death, contributed mightily to what eventually would become known as Manifest Destiny. Some are destined to contribute whether intended or not. The book deserves a place in the library of every serious student of the west. As a CA resident, I have the advantage of having traveled by car, and know well, the land this man walked. It is amazing. Highly recommended.

Exciting and Incredible!!!
This is a definite must read for early American West enthusiasts. Jed Smith's accomplishments, hardships and endeavors were in my opinion, unmatched by any others of his time. He was "the" mountain man! During the early days of exploration and expansion of the American West, Smith's courage and determination were beyond belief. The man was everywhere west of the Mississippi...it's unbelievable how much territory he covered! He was also the first white man to see and observe many of the places we all now take for granted. If you read only one book about the early American West...this should be the one.

Jesus and mastership : the gospel according to Jesus of Nazareth as dictated through James Coyle Morgan
Published in Paperback by Oakbridge University Press (07 July, 1995)
Author: Jesus Christ
Average review score:

Heart Warming and Informative
I loved this book from start to finish. Reading Jesus' own words is far more inspiring and readable than the King James version of the New Testament (or any other version), a book which has been edited and modified to meet the political and economic needs of Christianity and the West. This book sets forth the mission of the Master Jesus in simple and understandable words which ring with truth, kindness, and compassion. Even the most hardened fundamentalist cannot deny that this book has a marvelous message and story to tell.

Everything the NT should have been and more. Awesome
This book ranks at the very top of best metaphysical works. It's authenticity can be felt inside, as it gently touches the spirit within. The story is told as a narrative, which makes it easy to read while holding multiple levels of meaning and significance. After 4 readings, I still look forward to reading it again. This work by Master Jesus has my highest recommendation.

Lady of Light (Morgan, Kathleen, Brides of Culdee Creek, Bk. 3.)

Lady Of Light
I found this book on a shelf in a bookstore, thought it looked interesting and would serve the purpose of curing my boredom while sitting at home. Little did I know that this book would keep me enraptured so I could not put it down.
Normally I don't read books of this nature, but after realizing this is part of a series I went on a hunt for the other two and have not been let down thus far.

And they lived happily ever after? Not! What then?
Lady of Light is the 3rd book in the Brides of Culdee series. Just when I think Kathleen Morgan has written her best ever, she comes out with one more. I appreciate the reality of flawed humans dealing with diffucult relationships. I also appreciate the reality of a great God who is ever present. In Lady of Light, Evan and Claire fall in love in a short period of time and marry. Not only do they deal with the problems of most newlyweds, but Claire brings along her troubled younger brother and immediately moves to a new country. In this new country, which is Evan's home, Claire deals with questioning in-laws and working daily with Evan's first love. Did he marry on the rebound? Does he really love her? Does he still long for his first love? When tradegy looms, the whole family must work together. But how!?! The complicated relationships must grow stronger or break. Even growth is not without pain and scars. A true love story because God is love.

The Law of Gravity
Published in Hardcover by Wyrick & Co (November, 1995)
Authors: Dennis Morgan Cottrell and Charles L. Wyrick
Average review score:

Read this book!
Cottrell's modern day Huck Finn saga is extremely well written & accessible on every level. Not nearly so simplistic as it seems, the author clearly has a grasp of the literary South. Anyone who enjoys becoming enraptured by the power of a crafty storyteller should hope this is not the last we hear from this master in the making.

Cottrell is a modern Sam Clemens
The cleverly wound tale of the travails of one Patrick Gunn, a young teen growing up the hard way in the contemporary southern U.S. We follow him as he struggles to maintain his moral balance in spite of his family and trailer-trash buddies. There are obvious similarities in the plot to Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn but the book will work on the reader on more than one level and stay with you for quite a while. The prose is told in the easy slang of the South. The lazy pastoral setting of most of the early and middle part of the story set up the looming evil that the reader fears building, it's almost a relief when it comes. A highly satisfying novel. Lion of Ireland: The Legend of Brian Boru

Author: Morgan Llywelyn
Average review score:

This book is something that will truely astound you
Morgan is descriptive, historacly accurate, tuning this book into it's fine detail. It really makes you feel like you are part of the action, you cheer when Brian conquers and cry with all his suffering and loss. You get to know the main characters, and sence Ireland and the way it was when Boru reigned.

A must-read for all Irish and Irish wannabes
Absolutely incredible is how I would describe this book. Morgan Llywelyn's descriptions of Brian Boru and life in his camp bring the subject alive. It was like being there! You HAVE to read this book!

Loose Diamonds
Published in Paperback by Fithian Press (01 April, 2001)
Authors: Theodora Overton and Barbara Morgan
Average review score:

A Modern Classic
I thought this book was fast paced, original, and intriguing. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves to read. I literally could not put it down.

An entertaining book
I liked this book because while it seems like a fantasy, there are parts of it that seem very real. The characters, wild as they are, seem as if they could be real.

Excerpt from book review section of the Monterey County Post: Overton, a retired art teacher and interior designer, exposes a nineteen year old college drop out named Alice to the illicit pleasures available at Casa Danada, the mountain-top retreat of Pirrone Rivelli. A mysterious figure whose lifstyle includes fast cars, numerous women, and ties to the underworld. Rivelli holds a dagerous, nearly fatal attraction for the novel's young heroine.
Alice enters into an exotic world in which there are no rules. Life in this untamed milieu is lived on the edge. Alice nearly tumbles into the "abyss" as the romance of her new bohemialn life turns ugly and threatens to destroy the innocent young woman.

Loving Max (Zebra Bouquet Romances, No 13)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Zebra Books (Mass Market) (October, 1999)
Author: Wendy Morgan
Average review score:

Not your typical Romance
Back Cover:

"She'd learned to live in the shadows...until love brought her heart out of hiding.

There was a time when bubbly Olivia Halloran was the ultimate carefree California girl--happily married to a charming, wealthy businessman. But that was before her husband's violent treachery forced Olivia to take her young son and flee in the middle of the night. Now, living under an assumed name in a small town far from the bright lights of L.A., the last thing Olivia needs is to call attention to herself--or to get involved with anyone again. So when she rescues two young children from drowning, she suddenly finds herself in the media spotlight. For the spirited twins turn out to belong to the mysterious Max Rothwell, a brooding, reclusive man Olivia finds herself irresistibly attracted to.

Haunted by his own secrets and the tragic death of his wife, Max wants nothing to do with romance. Though he's drawn to Olivia's quiet strength and compassionate nature, something tells him she's not who she appears to be. What begins as a reluctant truce soon grows into a sensual longing, bringing two wounded souls together in a tender passion that may heal them both if they can learn to trust in their hearts..."

This is my first book by Wendy Morgan and with a 5 star rating will not be the last. I thought the characters and storyline were freshly written, although the storyline has been used many times. This is not a rehash of last decade's run of the mill story. The 'twists' to the story were realistic! Wow, finally a writer that writes about things going wrong and knowing we the reader will still get our 'retreat from reality fix'. I applaude Ms. Morgan on her courage, even though we know it will turn out alright. Hey, this is still category romance. :) Ms. Morgan also writes under another name. That information can be found when you purchase this book.

An enjoyable blend of romance and suspense.
I am a male reader who does not usually enjoy romance novels. LOVING MAX is a definite exception. Having read and enjoyed the books Wendy Morgan writes as Wendy Corsi Staub, I decided to give this one a chance.

The characters are well-developed and believable---so real that you will feel as if you know them. Combine the interesting characters with a fast-paced plot and you have a true page turner!

Ms.Morgan tells her story from both Olivia's and Max's perspectives, which heightened my interest. And the three children are adorable, the way real children are. These are not "TV sitcom" kids.

I look forward to reading more books from Wendy Morgan. Be sure to read Wendy Corsi Staub's many books, which include her latest suspense thrillers, FADE TO BLACK and ALL THE WAY HOME.
